Safety Program Earns Top Honors

Miller-Valentine is uncompromising when it comes to the safety of our jobsites, our Associates, and our subcontractors. We don’t accept baseline standards as good enough. OSHA compliance is the foundation for a tougher, more stringent program that we build in partnership with our subcontractors.

Our efforts are getting noticed. In late 2020, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) named us a STEP award recipient. ABC also recertified our Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC) designation. Never content to rest on our past achievements, we are taking our safety program even further by introducing a safety committee.

Big STEP: Miller-Valentine Achieves Platinum Level in National Safety Benchmark Program

A renewed commitment to benchmark, track, and improve all aspects of our safety program has earned Miller-Valentine a STEP award at the platinum level for 2020. The STEP program was founded in 1989 as a safety benchmarking and improvement tool. Participating companies measure their safety processes and policies across 25 key components. The goal is to reduce jobsite incidents by providing a guide for robust safety programs.

Participants are recognized at the bronze, silver, gold, platinum, or diamond levels. The designation is confirmation that our safety program works; platinum-level recipients are 328 percent safer than the industry average. That benefits our Associates and our subcontractors. It also provides our customers with greater peace of mind that we will build certainty with less risk.

Quality Check: Miller-Valentine Recertified as an Accredited Quality Contractor

ABC also recently recertified Miller-Valentine as an AQC. Launched in 1993, the AQC program provides recognition to world-class construction firms that have documented their commitment in five areas of corporate responsibility:

  • Quality
  • Safety (ABC STEP Gold, Platinum, or Diamond level required)
  • Employee benefits
  • Training
  • Community relations and diversity

AQC members proudly set the construction-industry standard for high-performing, ethical contractors and community members. The designation demonstrates our commitment to providing our clients with the highest quality construction services. It is also a testimony to our dedication to serve our communities and to provide Associates with the skills to work safely and productively to meet the needs of our customers.

AQC status is renewed annually and is recognized by Construction Users Roundtable (CURT®), an organization founded by leading construction project owners.

Safety Committee Aims to Enhance Safety Measures

In January, Miller-Valentine will launch a Safety Committee to further improve on our safety program. Up to 14 Associates ranging from field staff to vice presidents will meet quarterly to discuss initiatives, policies, Associate engagement, and other safety-related topics.

The goal is to provide our Associates with a voice on how to fine-tune our safety initiatives. Bringing more perspectives to the table will help us continually improve where needed and create more of a sense of ownership for safety across the company. From the field to our CEO, we are all invested in ensuring that everyone goes home at the end of the day in the same or better condition than when they arrived.
