Celebrating 45 Years of Dedication: Dave Selby
Forty-five years ago, Dave Selby traded the dusty trails of tractor driving for the dynamic world of construction, embarking on a journey where has built not just structures, but a legacy. His transition from the fields to foundations marked the beginning of a remarkable career with Miller Valentine, where his story is one of dedication, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship.
Dave’s journey into construction was as unexpected as it was transformative. Tired of the daily routine on his family’s farm, he stepped into the realm of residential construction, working alongside a family friend. His story with MV began at the age of 18 when he applied for a Laborer position. In the days when paper applications were the norm, Dave filled out an application and by the time he arrived home was called back into the office for an interview and eventual job offer.
His first project with MV involved working on a metal deck partition on Poe Avenue. Under the guidance of foreman Bob Krul, Dave learned the art of setting concrete forms and the complexities of underground storm piping. It was here that he forged his reputation for a strong work ethic and a competitive spirit that would define his career.
A personal highlight of Dave’s early career is the story of how he met his wife, Charleen, on a job site. While working on a project for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Dayton, Dave struck up a conversation with Charleen, the receptionist. Their playful exchange ended with Charleen’s charming question, “So when are you taking me to lunch?” This led to a first date at Red Lobster, and they recently celebrated 36 years of marriage.
Over the years Dave’s career developed from Laborer to Superintendent and eventually to Construction Manager, at every role Dave’s contributions have been pivotal in shaping MV’s projects. His ingenuity shone brightly during the Mission Pointe project in Beavercreek, where he developed a novel method for setting up radius panels in casting beds—a feat previously unachieved. This innovative spirit not only solved a complex problem but also set a new standard for project execution.
Dave’s career is also characterized by his ability to foster client relationships and partnerships, highlighted by his work with Pratt Industries. His initial involvement with the construction of the Lewisburg container plant in Ohio laid the foundation for a partnership that has taken Dave to sites in Wisconsin, Texas, and Georgia, partnering with our clients to bring their vision to life.
Reflecting on his journey, Dave describes MV with the words “patient and awarding.” His advice to those in the construction industry is a testament to his character: have patience, help each other, and embrace the learning journey. Dave believes in the power of teamwork and the importance of teaching and learning—a philosophy that has undoubtedly contributed to his success and the success of those around him.
