Miller Valentine Construction is expanding its footprint in the food manufacturing industry with an exciting new project for Voyage Foods. A food manufacturing startup, Voyage Foods focuses on creating allergy-friendly & environmentally sustainable foods — nut-free spreads, cocoa-free chocolate, bean-free coffee — with the mission of providing accessible, affordable, and sustainably-made products free from top allergens to consumers globally.
In August 2024, Miller Valentine began renovating a 275,000-square-foot facility in Mason, Ohio, to create the company’s first Midwest operations center. The project will transform a 1960s-era building into a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant for innovative food products.
Maneuvering Space Complexities to Deliver a Cutting-Edge Facility
Renovating an older building for food-grade manufacturing presents unique challenges. The Miller Valentine team is working diligently to bring the facility up to modern standards while adhering to strict food safety regulations.
“We’re aligning our construction materials, methods, and finished product with SQF (Safe Quality Food) standards,” explained Project Manager Sean Looney. “This includes installing specialty floor coatings for cleanliness and creating temperature-controlled storage areas to maintain product quality.”
The project scope includes extensive demolition work, installation of new HVAC systems, and the creation of a 30,000-square-foot cooled storage area. Miller Valentine is also assisting Voyage Foods with the installation of a Probat Roaster Line & specialized chocolate-making equipment, including a Buhler mass line and a Buhler Drops packaging solution.
Collaborative Approach to Meet Client Needs
As a startup expanding into a new market, Voyage Foods has unique needs and priorities. Miller Valentine is drawing on its design-build expertise to provide flexible solutions and support the client’s vision.
“Voyage Foods is an exciting new client, which is great,” said Looney. “They’re receptive to our ideas as their design-build partner, and we’re working closely with them to create a facility that meets their specific requirements.”
The project team is working around the complexities of renovating the space while coordinating the arrival and installation of Voyage Foods’ equipment. This requires careful planning and constant communication to ensure the construction timeline aligns with the client’s production goals.

This project marks an important step for Miller Valentine in the food manufacturing sector. “It’s a great opportunity for us to showcase our capabilities in food-grade facility construction,” noted Looney. “We’re excited to be part of bringing Voyage Foods’ innovative products to the Midwest market.”
The renovation is scheduled for completion by the end of the year, with the goal of having the facility “white-boxed” and ready for to begin production.
