Intraplás Establishing First U.S. Manufacturing Facility
Miller Valentine Construction is leading the construction effort for Intraplás, a plastic extrusion company specializing in sustainable and innovative packaging. Specifically, Intraplás is establishing its first U.S. manufacturing facility with a total planned investment of around 40 million euros. The project will transform a 100,000-square-foot facility in Van Wert, Ohio, into a state-of-the-art production space.
According to an Intraplás announcement, the new plant will create more than 50 new local jobs and will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology in the areas of extrusion, thermoforming, IML-T (In Mould Labelling Thermoformed), and HD (High Definition) printing.
Meeting International Production Timelines
After connecting in early 2024, Miller Valentine worked with Intraplás on design and value engineering before beginning construction. The project must meet specific timeline requirements to fulfill Intraplás’s commitments to U.S. clients in 2025.
“We are excited to partner with Intraplás on this significant investment to expand manufacturing into the United States,” said Andy McHugh, project manager. The company currently operates two facilities in the north of Portugal.
Coordinating Complex Systems Integration
As part of its responsibilities, Miller Valentine is overseeing the comprehensive interior fit-out, which includes 4,200 square feet of office space in addition to production and warehousing areas. The scope of work also encompasses installing process chilled water systems, new HVAC systems, process equipment foundations, and two new electrical services. To execute these tasks efficiently, Miller Valentine is collaborating with trusted partners such as Applied Mechanical Systems, Woolace Electric, and Benco Construction.
An essential aspect of the project involves careful coordination between construction activities and the installation of Owner-provided process equipment, which is set to arrive in March. Explaining this complex integration, McHugh noted, “We’ll coordinate construction activities, including running the utilities, installing the demising walls, and building out the office space, alongside the Owner’s process equipment installation, rigging, start-up, and commissioning.”
Building International Partnerships
One of the project’s unique challenges involves coordinating with Intraplás’s team in Portugal, five hours ahead of Ohio. To better understand the company’s needs, Miller Valentine’s team communicates regularly with Intraplás’s team via video communications.
The project is scheduled for completion in July 2025. “The construction schedule is accelerated to meet Intraplás’s production commitments here in the U.S. and we’re looking forward to collaboratively working with the Intraplás team along the way,” said McHugh. Ultimately, this initiative further solidifies Miller Valentine’s expertise in helping global manufacturers successfully establish a presence in the U.S. market. By fostering strong international partnerships and executing a highly coordinated construction plan, the company is playing a key role in bringing Intraplás’s vision to reality.
